At ease, Believers!
Rejoice, because your names are written in heaven! (Luke 10:20)
This is a subject where a good understanding prevents a misunderstanding. Without a doubt, the Judgment a believer fears the most concerns their life after death. Will I receive eternal life or eternal punishment? Will Heaven or Hell be my destiny? Will I be an heir of salvation?
Perhaps a more in-depth knowledge of the various Judgments in the Bible will help alleviate or remove this fear. There are several Judgments, and they differ in the individuals involved, basis, timing, place and outcome.
There is a difference in salvation and rewards. The good news is that salvation is solely determined by one’s faith—and NOT by works, actions, behavior or good deeds. The Bible tells us that if a person has professed faith in Jesus as their Savior (“believes in Him”) and is a Christian, they will immediately go to Heaven upon their death. Believers’ works will be reviewed in a later Judgment when rewards are given.
“If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you WILL BE saved” (Rom 10:9 NKJV).
“For by grace you HAVE BEEN saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God” (Eph 2:8 ESV) (NOT by your works).
~~~~~
The Judgment of Faith/Belief
(John 3:16-18)
Who? Every person will be judged according to their faith/belief in Jesus. Eternal life is conditional upon belief in Jesus Christ. (See exception* below)
Judgment Basis: Believers whose names are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life** who:
“Confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the Scripture says, ‘Whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame’ ” (Rom 10:9-11).
Notice the present tense verbs in the following verses:
“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life…He who believes in Him is not condemned [judged]; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God (John 3:16, 18 NKJV).
“He who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him”(John 3:36 NKJV).
He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. (John 11:25-26 NKJV).
“He who believes in the Son HAS [present tense] everlasting life“ (John 3:36 NKJV).
SEALED: The moment a person accepts/trusts Jesus as their Savior, God seals them with the Gift of the Holy Spirit. “In Him you also trusted after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise” (Eph 1:13-14 ESV). The TheHoly Spirit will at that moment enter and dwell in you permanently. What a great comfort, and why Jesus called the Holy Spirit the Comforter (John 14:16-18). He doesn’t come and go according to how “good” or “bad” we’ve been!
God claims believers as his adopted children and heirs of salvation. No one can break His seal. “No man can pluck them out of his hand” (John 10:27-29 KJV). Nothing can separate God’s children from God’s love (unless they renounce their allegiance to Jesus). The Holy Spirit indwells his children forever. Believers’ inheritance is Heaven. It is “an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you” (1 Pet 1:4 NKJV).
“The Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption” (Eph 4:30 ESV).
Timing: Upon death
Outcome: Eternal life or everlasting punishment—Heaven or Hell.
Believers go immediately to Heaven:
“Most assuredly, I [Jesus] say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life and shall not come into judgment” (John 5:24 NKJV).
“To depart and to be with Christ, which is far better” (Phil 1:21-23). (Christ is seated at God’s right hand.)
“To be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord” (2 Cor 5:8 NKJV).
However, Heaven will not be believers’ permanent eternal abode—that will be with God in the New Jerusalem in the new earth and new heaven” (Rev 21:1-4 NKJV).
Unbelievers: Interpretations differ as to where the unbeliever goes immediately at death.
1) Immediate: An unbeliever goes to a temporary place of anguish or torment called Hades/Hell, awaiting a future Judgment of their works.
2) Final: After the final Judgment of their works (the Great White Throne Judgment), they are cast into the lake of fire, a place of eternal punishment.
**The Lamb’s Book of Life contains the name of everyone who is born again (Rev 13:8; 21:27).
No believer will be blotted out of the Lamb’s Book of Life—unless he personally intentionally renounces his belief in Jesus.
“He who overcomes…I will NOT blot out his name from the Book of Life; but I will confess his name before My Father and before His angels” (Rev 3:5).
“And whosoever was NOT found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire” (Rev 20:15).
The Two Judgments for Works/Deeds
While Bible scholars differ as to the number of God’s Judgments that will occur in the future, they do agree that there will be TWO Judgments relating to deeds/works in a person’s lifetime.
These TWO Judgments for works/deeds/actions are:
(1) One for ALL believers’ works AFTER they were saved, called “The Bema Judgment.”
(2) One for ALL non-believers called “The Great White Throne Judgment.”
~~~~~
Judgment of BELIEVERS’ Works aka The Bema Judgment
(Luke 21:34-36)
Who? ALL believers up to that time.
Purpose: For all believers to stand before Christ and be evaluated for their life’s works/service for the purpose of receiving eternal rewards. This Judgment is NOT to determine one’s eternal destination, which is already settled for Christians via their faith in Jesus Christ. It is NOT to judge sins, repented or otherwise, for Jesus’ atonement washed away believers’ sins.
“For we must all appear before the Judgment Seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad” (2 Cor 5:10 NKJV).
“We shall all stand before the Judgment Seat…each of us will give an account of himself to God” (Rom 14:10-12 ESV).
This Judgment of Works is based on quality–NOT quantity or length of service. Believers’ actions/works will be tested (proven by fire). Quality works (seen as gold, silver and precious stones) will be rewarded. Works performed with wrong spirit or motive (seen as wood, hay and stubble) will perish, but the believer will still be saved.
“Each one’s work will become manifest…because…the fire will test what sort of work each one has done. If the work…survives, he will receive a reward. If anyone’s work is burned up, he will suffer loss, though he himself will be saved” (1 Cor 3:13-15 ESV).
Timing: Interpretations differ as to whether the Judgment of Works will occur upon death; before or after Christ’s Second Coming; or after the Rapture (translated in many Bibles as “caught up” in 1 Thes 4:17***). For certain, it will be before the new Heaven and Earth are created (Rev 21:1).
Outcome: While 1 Cor 3:10-15 explains the basis of rewards, it says nothing about the nature of these rewards. Three passages dealing with this particular Judgment indicate there are varying degrees of rewards for believers
(Rom 14:10-12; 2 Cor 5:10; 1 Cor 3:10-15).
Other passages speak of rewards as five kinds of crowns (1 Cor 9:25; 1 Thes 2:19; 2 Tim 4:8; James 1:12; 1 Pet 5:2-4). Other rewards come in the form of privileges and honors; e.g., praise/commendation from God (1 Cor 4:5); co-ruling with Christ (2 Tim 2:12; Rev 3:21; 5:10; 22:5); degrees of authority/position in the Messianic kingdom (Luke 19:17-19).
~~~~~
Judgment of UNBELIEVERS’ Works aka The Great White Throne Judgment
(Final Judgment, Rev. 20:11-12)
Who? All the unsaved/those who rejected God/Jesus come before The Great White Throne to be judged.
Judgment Basis: Unbelievers’ actions will be evaluated.
Timing: After Jesus’ second coming with angels (Mat 25:31), and after end of millennial kingdom (1,000-year reign).
Outcome: Those who do not believe are condemned (John 3:18, 36).
Presumably, there are varying levels of punishment for the nonbelievers/unsaved.
Jesus spoke of things being more tolerable for some than others in the Day of Judgment (Mat 11:20-24); that there would be few and many stripes (Luke 12:46-48); of greater and lesser sins (John 19:11).
Afterward: Following the Judgment sentencing, will come the execution of it, the eternal abode of the lost: “And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire” (Rev 20:14-15).
Divine Judgment – Divine Principles
Romans 2 sets out the fundamental principles of divine Judgment. That God will judge according to truth (v 2), deeds
(v 6), light (v 11-15), and the gospel, which reveals human thoughts and motives (“secrets of men” v 16). “Righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne; mercy and truth go before You” (Ps 89:14).
*Exception: “He that knew not” (Luke 12:48). Some believe that Paul indicated that some non-believers will be judged by a different standard. That those who had no knowledge or light regarding God/Jesus/Christianity will be justified by their deeds and works of their conscience (Romans 2-3; 14:14, 22-23).
“For when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do the things in the law, these, although not having the law, are a law to themselves, who show the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and between themselves their thoughts accusing or else excusing them” (Rom 2:14-15 NKJV).
The J. B. Phillips Bible paraphrases this passage as: “When the Gentiles, who have no knowledge of the Law, act in accordance with it by the light of nature, they show that they have a law in themselves, for they demonstrate the effect of a law operating in their own hearts. Their own consciences endorse the existence of such a law, for there is something which condemns or commends their actions.”
Perhaps the unbelieving Gentiles during the tribulation who assist the Jews fall into this category. Also, others through time who have helped “the least of these my brethren” (Mat 25:40); e.g., providing aid and shelter: to Jews being persecuted; to those escaping slavery (underground Railway); to Christians who are currently being persecuted in 50 countries (see Open Doors World Watch List); to those who take Bibles into countries where it is illegal; to those who assist the handicapped, poor, orphans, widows, needy, etc.
“Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world” (James 1:27 NIV).
“Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy” (Prov 31:8-9 NIV).
“Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the case of the widow” (Is 1:17 NIV).
“Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke? Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter—when you see the naked, to clothe them, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?” (Is 58:6-7 NIV).
“Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices—mint, dill and cumin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law—justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former” (Mat 23:23 NIV).
In Moses’ law, God commanded, “You shall neither mistreat a stranger nor oppress him…You shall not afflict any widow or fatherless child. If you afflict them in any way, and they cry at all to Me, I will surely hear their cry; and My wrath will become hot, and I will kill you with the sword; your wives shall be widows, and your children fatherless” (Ex 22:21-24 NKJV).
Zechariah 7—the entire chapter—gives God’s perspective and wrath regarding oppression. “Do not oppress widows, orphans, foreigners, and the poor. And do not scheme against each other” (Zech 7:10 NLT).
The theme of God’s heart of compassion for the oppressed is profound and reoccurs throughout the Bible. The word “oppressed” in Scripture refers to being crushed, burdened, or treated with unjust severity, often involving the poor and weak, suffering at the hands of the powerful.
The Needy: All through the Old and New Testaments God reveals His concern for those who suffer under the weight of injustice, poverty, and marginalization, especially the widow and orphans (fatherless). In the Old Testament, in his wrath, He frequently came down hard with punishment for those who oppressed, including periods of captivity for the Israelites. Prophets Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Amos, Zechariah, King David and probably more, described God’s severe displeasure in dire predictions for those who neglected or oppressed the needy.
“My defense is of God, Who saves the upright in heart. God is a just judge, And God is angry with the wicked every day” (Ps 7:10-12 NKJV).
“But do not forget to do good and to share, for with such sacrifices God is well pleased” (Heb 13:16).
~~~~~
Judgment of the Nations/Gentiles aka Judgment of Sheep & Goats
(Joel 3:2; Mat 25:31-33 — Jesus’ Olivet Discourse)
Situation: After Jesus’ Second Coming with all the angels and sits on his throne and all the nations aregathered before him. The Greek word nations is also the common word for Gentiles. Gentiles are everyone who is not a Jew. Some interpret this as a Judgment for Gentile nations and others for individual Gentiles.
Timing: During the 75-day interval between the last day of the Tribulation when the Antichrist is destroyed and the beginning of the 1000-year Messianic Kingdom (also called Messianic Age, the Millennium, Millennial Kingdom) when Jesus will be the King on David’s Throne (Dan 12:11-12).
Judgment Basis: (Mat 25:34-40). This Judgment will determine who among the living Gentiles OR the Gentile nations (interpretations differ) will be permitted to enter the Messianic Kingdom soon to be ushered in.
During the Tribulation, some Gentiles will bravely dare to violate the rules of the Antichrist and aid the Jews. In so doing, they follow their consciences and show their faith by their works (Jas 2:18). The Gentiles OR the Gentile nations will be judged for their treatment of Jews during the Tribulation. Those Gentiles who assist the Jews (Jesus’ brethren, God’s chosen people) when it will be very dangerous to do so, who provide them with food, drink, clothing, take in strangers, visit the sick and those in prison, Jesus calls “sheep.” Because of these acts, the Gentile sheep (individuals or nations) will be allowed to enter the upcoming Messianic Kingdom.
Jesus’ assurance: “Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me” (Mat 25:40 ESV).
To the sheep (the Gentiles who assist the Jews, Jesus’ brethren), Jesus says, “Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world” (Mat 25:34).
To the goats (the Gentiles who aid the Antichrist in his program of Jewish destruction, who did nothing to help the Jews), Jesus says, “Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels” (Mat 25:41 ESV).
The Bible depicts God as a champion of the oppressed, and consistently in both the Old Testament and New Testament, calls believers to advocate for justice, show mercy, and oppose oppression in all its forms. The oppressed are precious to Him—and He rewards those who show them loving kindness.
“He will redeem their life from oppression and violence; And precious shall be their blood [lives] in His sight” (Psalm 72:14).
“How precious is Your lovingkindness, O God! Therefore, the children of men put their trust under the shadow of Your wings” (Psalm 36:7).
~~~~~
“Great and marvelous are Your works,
Lord God Almighty!
Just and true are Your ways,
O King of the saints!
Who shall not fear You, O Lord, and glorify Your name?
For You alone are holy.
For all nations shall come and worship before You,
For Your Judgments have been manifested.” (Rev 15:3-4)
~~~~~
In closing, remember the God of Love, Truth and Justice has promised:
“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).
“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God” (Eph 2:8 ESV).

***The word rapture is translated caught up in 1 Thes 4:17 in many Bibles. The Greek word harpazó (Strongs No. 726) occurs some 14 times in the New Testament, and it literally means snatched away, suddenly removed.
