Today, I feel moved to share some thoughts about Worker preaching methods—specifically, how they work and why there is such a heavy stress on frequent attendance at Gospel meetings and conventions. I also want to explore why, at the end of certain convention sermons, you can feel as though you are waking up from a trance and slowly re-engaging with reality.
When you listen critically, you often find that the Workers aren’t saying much of anything—at least, nothing that makes logical, straightforward sense. Yet, their message digs deep into our minds. It dictates deep-rooted convictions, alters behavior, and can cause incredibly painful family separations. Combined with heavy environmental conditioning, their words plant a profound fear of hell and “worldly influence,” alongside a rigid conviction that this sect is the only group right with God.
These generated beliefs cause immense mental anguish. When a person realizes they need to leave the group for their own health, they often find they cannot easily shake the indoctrinated fear embedded in their mind and body. How is this possible?
The Total Rejection of “Straight Talk”
Certainly, the Workers do not use “straight talk” in their preaching. Can you imagine a Worker welcoming a newcomer to a Gospel meeting by being completely transparent?
“Welcome. We are a 125-year-old sect started by a charismatic Scotsman who got together with others to create an anti-mainstream way of worship. We turn our noses up at church buildings and disapprove of ministers who wear robes or jewelry. We believe we are the only ones on Earth who are saved and everyone else is going to hell—though if you ask us directly, we will deny it, even as we allude to it constantly in our preaching and testimonies.
We don’t have written doctrine, but we carefully interpret the Bible to support our lifestyle while ignoring the parts that don’t. If you join us, you will never be sure of your salvation; we want you to fear you aren’t doing enough because fear keeps you controllable. Oh, and you’ll need to change your hair, dress, makeup, and jewelry. Please hide your TV and pretend you don’t own one. We claim we ‘never change,’ but we actually do—we just do it gradually and silently so we can deny it ever happened.”
After a few minutes of this, any logical newcomer would shake their head, roll their eyes, and walk out. Their critical brain would reject it instantly.
Bypassing the Critical Mind
Because straight talk about 2×2 beliefs does not work, Workers use indirect, suggestive language. They rely heavily on allegory, metaphor, double meanings, and little “picture-painting” stories (which sound extra holy when labeled “parables”). On the surface, these stories sound lovely. Beneath the surface, they are loaded with subtle suggestions that everyone in the community learns to decode:
- “The Truth” translates to our specific church and structure.
- “Not taking a name” implies we are the only right ones who don’t need a worldly label.
- “The Way” shifts from a spiritual path to our exclusive club.
Think of the double meanings embedded in the oft-used Sower and the Seed parable: the sower is the Worker, the seed is the Worker’s words, fertile ground is unquestioning acceptance, and stony ground represents dangerous doubts.
From a linguistic-psychological perspective, these allegories bypass our critical, conscious minds and act directly on the subconscious and emotions—the exact place where our deepest beliefs reside. The conscious mind hears a nice story, while the subconscious receives a stark message: Submit, or you are doomed.
The Hidden Workings of the Subconscious
There is a lot more going on in our minds than just our stream of conscious thought. For a small example, notice what is happening right now as you read my words. Subconsciously, your mind is regulating your breathing, managing your movements, and monitoring your environment. You are feeling shifting emotions. Even while focused on these exact sentences, your eyes and visual cortex stay aware of the space beyond your screen. Your ears remain alert to any changes in the sounds around you. Without a single conscious thought, you naturally adjust your posture for comfort.
Yet, you weren’t actively aware of any of that until something drew your attention to it—just like I did just now. If something suddenly moves or changes in the room around you, your subconscious, which is constantly scanning to keep you safe, will immediately signal your consciousness. Your attention will instantly shift to that stimulus to check it out. It is a fascinating design, and it shows just how much happens beneath our active awareness.
The Mechanics of the Convention Trance
Suggestive language is the same technique a hypnotist uses to bypass conscious resistance. Hypnosis relies on a “trance,” which is a natural human state of hyper-focused attention. It is a half-conscious state between sleeping and waking where the conscious mind quiets down and the subconscious remains highly active. We all experience mild trances daily—like when you drift off driving and can’t remember how you got to your destination or someone asks, “Where were you just now?”
I once participated in an African drumming circle during a course. I was asked to beat the main rhythm on a large center drum in a darkened room. As the beat accelerated and other instruments circled around me, I closed my eyes to absorb the sound. When the session wrapped up, I thought a few minutes had passed. I was astounded to learn it had been more than two hours.
Recognizing what a trance actually is allowed me to realize I had experienced them during emotionally charged convention meetings. We have all felt that sensation of emerging, blinking, and slowly re-engaging with the world around us after the final hymn.
When you look at it objectively, the convention environment is perfectly designed for this psychological shift:
- The built-up expectation of entering a sacred, revered place.
- The hushed reverence before meetings, signaling to the brain that something monumental is happening.
- The beautiful, harmonic singing of deeply suggestive hymn lyrics.
This environment sets the stage for maximum suggestibility. With a bit of framing, it is easy to interpret a natural psychological phenomenon as “feeling the spirit” rather than the universal human experience that it is.
Understanding “Peak Experiences”
Psychologist Abraham Maslow coined the term “peak experiences” to describe brief, intense moments of awe, deep joy, and unity that stand out sharply from everyday life. When we experience these moments within a specific group, we naturally attach profound religious significance to them and allow them to shape our beliefs.
However, this phenomenon is not unique to us or this sect. It happens to humans in all kinds of settings, rituals, and concerts, reinforcing all kinds of completely conflicting beliefs.
A Natural State, Weaponized
By the way, despite its association with stage entertainment and general weirdness, there is nothing inherently wrong or magical about hypnosis and the state of trance. As I mentioned, it is a completely natural human state that we all drift into from time to time. Many people have found hypnotherapy to be extremely helpful when it is performed with integrity, care, and professional boundaries.
Indirect language and subtle influence are also used every day in sales, marketing, and politics to nudge people’s behavior.
However, because these techniques work so powerfully on the subconscious, they can obviously be deeply harmful when misused. Hypnotic language and environmental manipulation are the exact tools used by high-control groups and destructive sects to enforce mind control. In the wrong hands, these methods can even be used to implant false memories—something that sometimes happens when well-meaning but unethical therapists use poor techniques.
When a group uses these psychological methods without your conscious knowledge, it strips away your ability to choose freely. Recognizing that the intense emotions and “trance” states we felt at convention were actually natural psychological responses—not mystical proof of exclusivity—is a massive step in unlearning the fear, breaking their power, and reclaiming our minds.
